Homebuyer Education

The road to homeownership can often be an overwhelming process for a first time homebuyer. NDC's Homebuyer Education classes can help answer the many questions you may have and familiarize you with how to safely find, finance and purchase your home. Topics include:

  • What to look for when selecting a home
  • Tips for working with a realtor
  • How to preparing for meeting with a lender
  • Calculating your debt to income ration and an affordable mortgage payment
  • What makes up your credit score and ways you can improve it
  • Predatory lending and how you can avoid the traps
  • Taxes and insurance
  • The ins and outs of closing on your home
  • Resources available to you once you are homeowner

The Homebuyer Education class is a requirement if you are planning to receive a MSHDA mortgage or down payment assistance from the City of Grand Rapids. Because NDC staff are certified Links-to-Homeownership counselors, the education you receive through our program allows you to be eligible for those products for up to a year after you complete the course.

Classes are open to everyone. Please call 371-7500 to register. Group classes can also be arranged under special circumstances. If you are a school principal, PTA group, church leader, or employer who is interested in arranging a Homebuyer Education class for a group of parents, church members, employees, etc., please contact NDC to discuss opportunities for partnership.
